At TNT Services, we’re not a concrete-only shop or an excavation-only shop. We do it all — and this job in Cumberland Furnace shows exactly what that looks like from start to finish.
This week, we wrapped up the foundation wall on a build in Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee. Excavation’s done, the footer is in, the wall is up, and next up is the building slab. One crew, one project, every step of the process.
What Does It Mean to Build a Foundation From Scratch?
A lot of contractors specialize in one part of the process. They dig, but don’t pour. Or they pour concrete, but they’re not set up for excavation. That means you end up coordinating multiple subs, scheduling handoffs between crews, and hoping nobody drops the ball between phases.
When one company handles the whole thing — like we’re doing here in Cumberland Furnace — the job moves faster and there’s a single point of contact when questions come up. Here’s how the process works:
Step 1: Excavation
Before any concrete goes in, the site has to be prepared. That means digging to the correct depth, removing material, and shaping the cut so the footers sit on undisturbed soil. Doing this right protects the foundation’s long-term performance — poor excavation is one of the most common reasons foundations fail years down the road.
Our excavation crew handles site prep, land clearing, grading, and utility trenching throughout Middle Tennessee.
Step 2: Footer Installation
The footer is the base of the foundation — it spreads the building’s load across a wider area of soil. Footers need to be poured at the right depth (below the frost line), with proper reinforcement, and with enough width for the wall that sits on top. Get the footer wrong and everything above it is compromised.
Step 3: Foundation Wall
Once the footer’s cured, the wall goes up. This can be poured concrete, block, or a combination depending on the design. We finished the wall on this Cumberland Furnace job this week — so next up is forming and pouring the building slab itself.
What Comes Next: The Building Slab
The slab is the floor of the structure — and like the footer, it has to be done right. Proper subbase compaction, correct vapor barrier placement, reinforcement that matches the load requirements, and a pour that’s level and smooth. We’ll be back on this site soon to close it out.
Why Does It Help to Have One Contractor for Excavation and Concrete?
The handoff between excavation and concrete is where jobs stall out. If your excavation crew digs too shallow, the concrete crew has to stop and call for re-work. If they dig too wide or not wide enough, your forms don’t land right. When the same company manages both phases, those issues get caught before they become problems.
That’s a real advantage on a job like this — and it’s part of why clients in Humphreys County and surrounding areas keep coming back.
